01 / The real question

Can a general-purpose AI hold a therapy-like conversation?

It can respond to personal writing in a conversational way. That does not make it a therapist, create a confidential clinical relationship or guarantee that a response is safe for your situation.

When someone asks whether Claude can be a therapist, they are usually asking about continuity, privacy, emotional usefulness and what to do when a conversation becomes urgent. Those are separate questions and should be evaluated separately.

  • Does the tool remember only what you expect it to remember?
  • Do you understand where your messages are processed and under which terms?
  • What happens when the situation needs a human, a clinician or emergency support?

02 / A fair comparison

Compare the system around the model, not just the tone of one answer.

A useful comparison looks at memory controls, privacy disclosures, conversation continuity, deletion, access recovery and crisis boundaries. These product details change over time, so check the provider’s current policies instead of relying on a review or a single reassuring response.

IndividuateAI is built around the continuity problem: saved context you can inspect, a visual map of recurring concepts and a separate relationship graph. It is still an AI service, not a clinician, and its privacy page states where encryption ends.

03 / Safety boundary

Do not use a chatbot as your only support in a crisis.

Do not rely on Claude, IndividuateAI or any general-purpose AI as an emergency service, suicide-prevention service, crisis counselor or substitute for urgent medical care. If you may hurt yourself or someone else, contact local emergency services or a crisis resource where you live.

For trauma treatment, medication questions, abuse, psychosis, severe distress or decisions with major consequences, involve a qualified human professional who can understand the situation and take responsibility for care.

05 / Questions

Common questions about Claude therapy

Is Claude a therapist?

No. Claude is a general-purpose AI assistant, not a licensed therapist or a clinical care relationship. A thoughtful response does not change that boundary.

Is Claude therapy private?

Privacy depends on the current product, account and provider terms. Read Anthropic’s current privacy policy and consumer terms before sharing sensitive information.

Can Claude help in a crisis?

Do not use Claude as your only crisis support or emergency service. Contact local emergency services or an appropriate crisis resource, and involve qualified human support.

What is different about IndividuateAI?

IndividuateAI is designed around inspectable continuity: selected memory, a visual mind map and relationship context. It is also an AI service and does not replace a human therapist or crisis support.
